Your first visit
Your first Acupuncture Visit - what to expect and how to prepare:
What does Acupuncture feel like?
Most people feel no or minimal pain as the needles are inserted. A dull, heavy, or aching feeling often occurs when the needle is correctly placed. This is referred to as ‘de Qi’. Some people are energized by treatment, while others feel relaxed or even tired.
What does an Acupuncture treatment look like?
After a proper diagnosis (i.e. collecting information of your chief complaint, health history, inspecting your tongue and palpating your pulse), which is the key for a successful treatment, the needles are inserted. Usually the needles are left in place for 15-30 minutes. By manipulating the needles the flow of Qi can be strengthened or reduced. Lifting, twisting, and rotating are some of the needling techniques that are used.
How to prepare for a visit?
Wear comfortable and loose clothing like shorts or yoga pants and a tank-top. Don’t eat any large meal immediately before your visit, but make sure you don’t come with an empty stomach either. Have something small and some water before Acupuncture.
How many treatments will I need?
The number of treatments needed differs from person to person. For chronic conditions one or two treatments a week for several weeks or months may be recommended. For acute problems usually fewer visits are required. For health maintenance, four sessions a year may be all that is necessary.
